GH, Chennai-600003

Is it General hospital or Govt: Hospital or (Gorgeous, gratuitous recovery provider, genius doctors, good enough facilities) hospital????? I visited GH today and was astonished at itz clean and healthy environment. All private hospitals stand no-where near this one. The treatment given here is almost free for low-income group. The patient whom I visited was in his convalescence period after an important operation. The total amount he paid for the period of 2 days is just Rs 40/-. It would not be the same in any private hospitals. The place looks spic & span and even if there is anything thats becuase of our people's actions. The place is visited by lakhs of people and it requires a solid working hours to keep that clean.

The real history of GH is like this:It is perhaps the country's first hospital was set up over 300 years ago in Chennapatna, now Chennai. It was Governor Edward Winter who set up that hospital at Fort. St. George, for the British residents. On October 15, 1772, the hospital was inaugurated where the Government General Hospital stands today. However, the hospital became truly a "general hospital" only in 1842, when Indians were admitted as in-patients. In 1889 it became a full-fledged civilian facility. By the 1930s, it had come to be regarded as one of the best hospitals in Asia. Since being maintained by Govt:, bribery & poor maintenance remains a major problem. But despite its shortcomings, the GH continues to serve lakhs of poor patients - from all over and even outside the State, with the aid of modern technology. Its Nice to hear that Govt also provides good facilities in its Hospital. But to sustain all these its Ppl who have to help the govt. Hopefully they will improve the facilities in Royapetah and Tambaram Sanatorium Hospitals too (which are poorly Maintained).

And its nice that u have added the history of the hospital too.

This is heartening to learn that health care is pretty affordable in chennai GH. I wish GHs in rest of metros do come with such sustainable models to help the under-previleged. I cheer for your nice post.
