2005-A year of Natural Disasters

Though there r many gud things to write about this specific year the main thing that comes to mind is all the natural disasters that occurred through out the world. Beginning with Massive Indonesian Quake in February the year had faced a lot of quakes, volcanoes and storms. Then was the heavy rainfall at Mumbai that caused inundation of large masses of land .Had storms of varying names like Katrina, Wilma in America, a quake at Pakistan then lashing Chennai in the form of rain where people who did puja for bringing in rains ,are now doing the same for ending up the monsoon. And finally a large 5.9 earthquake that struck southern Iran. Jaggy has done a foto feature on Chennai Rains All these years v were quite carelessly working out things without considering the impact on nature. Now itz the nature's time to put us all into problems. Starting of with Tsunami of Dec 26th 2004 the climate has seen various changes with heavy snow and rainfalls and drought at many places in earth. Atle...

Traffic-cops and Bribe

We Indians always have this habit of portraying the traffic police as bad guys, since they demand bribe. But how many of us accept the fact that, in most cases (lets say 90%), he's demading bribe, since we broke the law. How many of us have the courage, to stand up and say that i'ld pay the fine instead of bribing him. Till today, I havent bribed a traffic cop. Even at times when i was caught for running past thr' RED signals, exceeding speed, i'ld insist paying the fine, and they let me go. Many times, I had scoffed at them, as they demand meagre amount such as 30-50Rs.It might sound a bit cheap, on their part, but the reality is that their financial condition is in such a bad state. I'm sure that their monthly pay would not be more than 7-8K, with no incentives. And even if he's uncorrupt, a traffic constable doesnt have the authority to fine; only a traffic seargent has the rights. So that being the case, the only way to punish the traffic voilaters is to bug...

Weekend Outings.

Image
Oops!!Exams postponed.I started pondering where to go atleast to give a short break. Finally convinced my parents for a drive towards a village called Tamaripakkam, around 35 kms from my place where Chinmaya's mission Temple is located. So thought of venturing out to that place since itz not an usual one where we normally roam around. A nice and calm place away from citie's dust and noise .It was exactly like a village shown in films with paddy fields on both sides of the wide highway. The monsoon has caused a wonderful effect on the weather and the paddy fields. The fresh air made us to pull down our car windows which is normally pulled up to avoid dust.Mom packed our lunch so that it wuld not b necessary to drive back again quickly. We reached the place around 12:30.The 65ft tall Temple and Satsang Hall is designed in the form of a Shiva Lingam. A Sphatika Lingam - an 'endless' form in crystal encrusted with diamonds and the granite linga was consecrated by the pouring o...

A visit to Singapore.

Singapore is actually called as Mini–India, but I would call it as Mini-TamilNadu. When venturing out of India for the first time, I was more worried about food with capital ‘F’ than the other factors like altitude fears. Missing mom’s idlies and Dosas was a horrible option to me. But was quite relieved to have all Chennai dishes out there. Out of all the places I visited in Singapore, I am jst putting down some of the best places I rem’bered. Sentosa Island: The Sentosa Island is located in the South of the city. The tropical forests which covered formerly the essence of the island of Singapore are limited today to the center where we find vast natural reserves. There are several ways to reach Sentosa Island, but the best is to take the cable car from Mt. Faber. The cable car offers some dramatic views of the city and Sentosa Island. Mt. Faber is not a terribly high mountain, but it is high enough to offer a good vantage point of the city. The Night Safari: The Night Safari is one ...

Rise and Fall of the Third Reich- a Review

The Rise & Fall of The Third Reich is a voluminous showcase of history during the Second World War. As the title suggests, it deals with Nazi Germany & more specifically Adolf Hitler & his brand of the Superior ’’Aryan’’ race. The book starts of with the birth of Hitler, his childhood & his brand of ideals. The pace is very meticulous & credit must go to the writer to script Hitler’s childhood. The pace slowly quickens as Hitler moves to Austria. Over 1400 pages of tightly spaced print and more footnotes than you can shake a stick at. However, it is an immensely rewarding read as Shirer presents the facts and tells the Reich's various stories in a very readable way. At certain points the reading can become heavy, especially when the author takes time out of the main timeline to explain side lines of interest, such as the almost amusing German plot to force the abdicated former King of England to speak well of the Reich during the war. By and large, though, the i...

Interview-Cleared.

I was jst wondering what to blog…then my frnd just pointed out to blog about my native. Confused how this is connected to the title???? I thought a topic that played a major role in my campus interview would be a good topic to blog about. Before telling U how this helped me out let me tell U something about my native. Though living in dust filled and noisy Chennai [Chennai fans please forgive me], I rightly belong to a calm village called Chelakkara, which is a valley and is surrounded by the Machat Mountains on all the four sides. This village belongs to the cultural headquarters of Kerala- Thrissur. My mom’s native is Thrissur. According to Malayalees, the kid follows her mom’s custom. Thus I follow my mom’s custom. The term Thrissur is the abbreviated anglicized form of the Malayalam word "THRIS-SIVA-PERUR" which means the town of the "SACRED SIVA”. It is the place of 3 Shivan temples - Thiruvambadi temple, Vadakkunathan Temple and Pamamekkavu. [Names look different r...
